Almost every country town in Australia has a Commercial Hotel. This one is situated in the Victorian town of Beechworth. It is Beechworths oldest surviving hotel, dating back to 1852, originally built after gold was discovered. In 1873 it was bought by Thomas Tanswell, who added a second level to the hotel and dubbed it Tanswells Commercial Hotel. Tanswells hotel is now what it was then, a Beechworth landmark that sits proudly in the centre of town.
