...the small church in the village of Ashford-in-the-Water, Derbyshire, dates way back to the 13th Century and the south door has an original Norman tympanium showing a tree of ife in the centre with a hog and wolf facing it. I must capture that next time. An ancient custom that once took place in the village was the hanging of funeral garlands from the roof of the church. Four of those garlands still hang and the oldest is from 1747. They were made of white paper cut to form rosettes and fixed to a wooden frame and would be carried before the coffin of a young virgin in the funeral processing beford being hung up.

This is a beautiful old church with a very nice old graveyard. Where is it? I like your shot - a beautiful motive, wonderful sky and great colors.

Great shot, and thanks for the history behind it. But it got me to thinkin - without all the modern stuff that we have, how did they build these buildings to last so long? Hmm???
I really like the tree on the left - adds a nice partial frame.

What a neat old church Patti! Is it still in use today? I'll bet those headstones go back quite aways too dont they? Would be interesting just walking through & seeing names and dates on them. Excellent shot of this, Ms. Patricia, ma'am! C):-)
