The south wall of my house looks like it's covered in dead wood every spring, looking a lot like this. Now it's lush and carpeted in green. Vines like these literally "mountain climb" walls that have even just a slightly rough surface. Tiny "teeth" grow out along the vines and curve into any small opening, tightly holding the vines to the wall (this one looks like it has a light stucco surface). If one were to try removing them by hand it could be done, but you'd wear yourself out doing it. As I said, I have this on my house... but my house isn't this picturesque. Thanks for this one, Ted... I love the natural wave-like patterning going on here.
