remember, i told you that the masai school had a chalkboard. this child sang the ABC song while pointing to each letter. the other children in the class sang the song, too. since it was a bit dark and since i didn't have a tripod you will find that things closest to me are not in focus. i decided to leave the heads at the bottom and verticals on the side thinking they made a frame. i didn't want to crop any of the draping on the child. thanks in advance for any comments. ENJOY!

Great post, Jen. Just like the school I attended. lol Really, the people are very creative and seem to make do with very little. I love the story I am seeing and leaving the verticals was a good idea.

Another good one Jen. The child seems intent and one seems anxious to give an answer. It is nice to see the learning process at its roots. I wouldn't have cropped anything either.

I have to agree with the comments above. It's a very poignant pic for me as I remember when I learned to read...what a magical time it is.

Great photo, and your decision making was flawless.

We don’t make art to show someone what something looks like. All this requires is eyes (or a lens). Art is supposed to have meaning, emotion, power, or magic. Alan & Mario "FourThirds"

It's a complete shock! The only window to life is the chalk board that will free the pupils from their wooden prison. I know my comment is paternalist. The Masai are proud people and they would not agree.

Think 'too dark' and 'not in focus' doesn't count that much for this image, as it gives us a perfect view of life in this part of the world. Hard to imagine for us that kids are getting their school education this way. On the other hand it does realize me that a lot of children in Africa aren't even able to visit a school. Great post to me Jen!

no explanations necessary. The subject of the picture is in focus, and the picture tells a story. You should spend more time taking pictures of people. You are good at it. Not carrying a tripod, opps! thats not being prepared. The only thing I would of preferred is a little more side view of the child's face.Good job, do more please.

While trying to create good pictures, I feel as if I am standing on the edge of Insanity. There is a door. I found myself knocking on the door. The door opened.. . . I was knocking from the inside. Oh Rats!
