While taking a walk through the monastery two weeks ago I spotted this wasps nest in a tree about 12 feet above the footpath - at this time of the year the nest is not active and has been abandoned - the wasps will not use this nest and will build a new one next year in which to raise their young - it's interesting to know that the nest is made of what's known as wasps paper - they chew wood pulp and other plant debris and mix it with their saliva in order to construct the nest - I find them to be fascinating creatures and I always make sure I keep my distance when they are active in the spring and summer months.
