Hummingbirds never fail to amaze me. These flying jewels can be almost comical in their antics. Though anyone who has observed them for any length of time knows that they can be extremely aggressive and territorial little creatures, especially about their food sources. While not a technically perfect image, I wanted to share this pic because it shows behavior that can not usually be seen with the naked eye. These two female Rubythroat hummers were serious about establishing who was the Alpha female, claws and beaks at the ready.

Thanks for all of your kind comments. It is all done with high-speed flash and can be done with the garden variety Vivitar 283 flashes (you'll need a minimum of two, but more is always better) these are available on Ebay for about $50 and an additional $20 for the Varipower module available from B&H photo. This particular photo was taken with 1 Canon 550EX, 1 Canon 430EX and 2 Vivitar 283's all dialed back to 1/32nd power, a Canon 20D and Canon's 100-400mm IS lens at 200mm. The setup for the birds is about 15 feet from the camera and the flashes are about 18-20 inches from the food source. ISO 200, f11 @ 1/250th of a second. The most important thing is not having ANY other direct light sources or you will get "ghosting" on the fast moving wings from the residual light sources. I have hundreds of hummer pics, so you'll be seeing more in the future.

Thanks again for viewing and the comments.

WOW - I hope to one day (perhaps in my next life) be able to take photos as this one. It's obviously technically advanced and the set up resulted in a perfect image! Can't wait to see more... ~Mary~

Wow! They remind me a little of my 2 dogs, who are constantly play fighting, and sometimes they look like that!! Great job, it IS a perfect image! Keep 'em coming! Happy new year as well!

Yes I am a little jealous, I see the Hummers fight all the time but have always missed the photo or one is to blurry. Very good work getting them both in focus.

After seeing one photo I needed to see all of your gallery. Outstanding is the word to use for such photography. My only complaint is there are not more to be seen. Great work and I look forward to seeing more. Thanks for giving us the technique of capturing hummingbirds. I too have never seen them fighting in a photo. They can be dangerous to each other as I had several killed by other hummers.
