Juneau, Alaska, USA. When the humpback whales have lunged from their dive and captured the fishin their mouths, they sink back into the water, mouths closed, squeezing out the water through the baleen (the dark fringed overlapping plates hanging from each side of the upper jaw, where teeth might otherwise be located) with their hugh tongues. The ribbed underside of the whale expands to accommodate the water and food, retracting when the water is expelled. The mist is from a whale's spout, exhaled when they lunged at the school of fish. There are five whales visible in this photo. Enjoy!
