Williamsburg, Virginia, USA. Throughout the Governor's Palace, built when Virginia was one of the British colonies, reminders of the king's control were abundant. As with each of the public rooms, here above the arched doorway from the entry chamber to the dining and ball rooms, was a royal crest.

That's some mighty fine wood work. Not many today can reproduce this level of craftsmanship. Nice details on the crest, Thad

That is some fancy schmancy woodwork! Just the cost of it alone around that doorway is probably worth more than everything I own. Love the crest, too. Nice shot, Thad.

The details in this image are wonderful...the expert craftsmanship in the wood working and the intricacies of the crest. Crests are an interesting subject all by themselves. This one has a harp, for example, which must have some meaning.

Great capture!

Queen Anne had a crest as Queen of England. But in 1707, she had a crest made as Queen of Great Britain. The latter is the crest in your photo.

In 1707, the union was heraldically expressed by the impalement, or placing side-by-side in the same quarter, of the arms of England and Scotland, which had previously been in different quarters.

The new arms were: Quarterly; I and IV, Gules three lions passant guardant in pale Or (for England) impaling Or a lion rampant within a double tressure flory-counter-flory Gules (for Scotland); II, Azure, three fleurs-de-lis Or (for France); III, Azure, a harp Or stringed Argent (for Ireland).

So the harp represented Ireland. Interesting.
