Charlottesville, Virginia, USA. By terracing the mountaintop at Monticello, Jefferson created conditions that were suitable to grow items not typically found in Virginia. Here is a row of Marseilles figs, cuttings for which he brought back from France, planted against the outside of the kitchen wall which created a microclimate.

This is lovely Thad- the green of the fig leaves especially vibrant. I am drawn into the picture and would like to walk the length of the row :)
It is the fig season here in NZ now. My friend has a tree. I love them baked with honey, or in a salad with blue cheese :)
