Torrey Pines Preserve, La Jolla, California, USA. Being a semi-arid environment, the soil composition is such that it can hold a large quantity of water, enabling vegetation to survive. However, the moisture, coupled with temperature changes can 'blow out' the soil, creating interesting shapes.

Very interesting but I see the origin of some of California's brown hills my husband spoke of from when he lived out there.

The wide variety of rather exotic , for me , fauna and colors stand out so well with those soil configurations and make this photo so good. Really well put together Thad.
