This is a monument dedicated to all those who serve or have served in the U.S. Air Force. That's the Pentagon behind it and my perspective places the monument exactly where hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 crashed on 9/11, killing all 64 people on board including the five hijackers and six crew as well as 125 people in the building. Hence, W for Why? That's the U.S. Capital in the background. The Jefferson Memorial and a part of Arlington Cemetery can also be seen off to the left. As you can see, aircraft make frequent flights into nearby Reagan National Airport. This photo is best viewed in full. It is my entry into the current contest. I returned from D.C. yesterday so I should be more regular on Caedes. Thanks for looking and leaving a comment.

Doug, I don't know if it could get any better than this image. First of all W for why is well documented in this capture. It is a very dramatic image, and a excellent entry for the contest, and a meaningful tribute to those who lost their lives on 9/11. It's been a few years but I have stayed in DC some years ago, and this all looks so familiar to me, except for the monument of course. Bravo! and I'm glad you made it home safely, this is a fave for me. =^..^=tigs♥

An impressive photo and a very good entry for the contest Doug. As to the question why - ignorance, hatred, Fanaticism, all these still do not in any way explain why innocent persons should become the victims.

That's a beautiful picture Doug and a good one for the contest. What happened on that day will always be a big why for many. My niece was in that building at that time of that terrible day. I thank God she was alright.

I believe we ask the 'why' everyday. The 9/11 tragedy affected so many people ... not only in the USA, but all across the globe. Excellent contest entry, Doug ... one that conveys emotion too. Best wishes in the contest.

Washington DC is well known to me Doug (because I've visited many times Alexandria, Virginia). So the by you pictured Pentagon is well known to me too. The monument however is new to me, because I was already retired when the 9/11 tragedy had happened. Thanks for this 'update' my friend. A somewhat touching (realizing what has happened then) but appropriate image for the contest. Good Luck.

Doug - Why remains an unanswered question. the 'W' makes a fine entry for the contest. With the larger perspective of DC in the background, it is a poignant monument. Thad
