I found this Trabant parked outside the main market in Budapest. The Trabant is a car that was produced by former East German auto maker VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke Zwickau in Zwickau, Saxony. It was the most common vehicle in East Germany, and was also exported to countries both inside and outside the Eastern Bloc. The Trabant was a steel monocoque design with roof, trunk lid, hood, fenders, and doors made of Duroplast. Duroplast was a hard plastic made of recycled materials: cotton waste from the Soviet Union and phenol resins from the East German dye industry. Thanks for looking and leaving a comment.

These cars always look like mini taxi's to me. I love the recycle idea - wish everyone would recycle more and throw out less in the landfills, etc. Good capture Doug.

I think the Trabant was designed to be an economy car back then, but ended up being not fuel efficient. From what I read the car had speed though & for some in the U.S. it's a collectors item. Magnificent capture, Doug ... the car looks to be in fairly good condition. I like the detail.

Is that from the 60's? I have probably seen them in movies. Stick some mag wheels on it and it would be hot to trot! lol. Nice picture, Doug.

I read where the life span of producing the Trabant was about 30 years Gibbs. I also read that the 1975 model was #27 in the 50 worse cars of all time. They said it smoked like an Iraqi oil fire. :)
Your shot is good nonetheless.

Doug, as far as I know, the Trabant has a two-stroke engine and in my country it's not allowed to ride any longer on the road with it because of air pollution. It's only a collectors item now for car-lovers.
Good capture my friend.

A good find Doug and I like the architecture around it. I really like the pavement it sits on. Now if they had restored this to mint condition that would be awesome. You gave an interesting narrative about it.

There are few left as souvenirs in Germany now. The others had to be scrapped as they did not meet the standards required in "New" Germany.

"Trabant" and "Zaporozhets" were cars of socialism. In the years of socialism in Bulgaria usually buy these cars, but for others who in those times were considered "luxury" is waiting for years... and people often pay bribes to be able to buy them. Other cars "luxury" cars of those times were Russian "Zhigula", "Lada", "Volga" (this car was super luxurious and just bought the red elite) and also the Czechoslovak "Skoda". Polish Fiat also declined to inaccessible luxury cars. My father managed to buy his "Peugeot" until the late 80s.
The first two cars of my family we bought them when I and my ex-husband we were in Vietnam in the late 80s and early 90s. They were then the latest models of "Toyota Corolla". "Toyota Corolla" was the most suitable for heavy climatic conditions of Vietnam. After we finally returned to Bulgaria, we bought "Opel Ascona"...

In the 60s and early 70s the governments of Russia, Bulgaria, and guess and the other socialist countries, for formal occasions used cars brand "Chaika" ("Seagull"). These cars are like the modern limousines. When the time comes to replace them with other models, a friend of my father bought one of them... I was amazed at the luxury of these cars. They were incredibly beautiful and gorgeous.
