Or so this "RED Squirrel" must have thought to himself ... sitting atop a feast of nuts and seeds. This little guy is slightly larger than a chipmunk but smaller than the more common "GRAY" most often seen throughout NY. However under the strict wildlife protectorate in the Adirondack Park region, I'm told the Red outnumbers the Gray (Note the black stripe that separates the white underside from the reddish back.) Despite their size they are more aggressive than their larger Gray cousins, but nonetheless entertaining with their acrobatic antics. On the down side, the locals tell me they can create havoc should one manage to find it's way into the house.

And there I was thinking that the Red Squirrel was the European variety. He’s an awfully cute little chap isn’t he? And an awfully lucky one too. It looks like you got the focus spot on, the detail is great.

The Red Squirrel is usually less aggressive, hence the Grey taking over most of Europe.
Sadly we don't see red's here now, at least rarely.

This is a wonderful shot of this little guy, lovely and clear :)

In North Germany what we mostly have are the large red squirrels - always too fast for the camera! Lovely shot this, John the guy hasn't even noticed you - no wonder with all those nuts around.

That cut little thing must think he is in heaven. That's a nice clear shot. How far away were you when you took this picture?

It does indeed have that look on its face John LOL. Wonderful detail in this- I can see the "tufts" on the ears so well. The squirells that inhabit my area are mainly the gray and I love to listen to and watch them as they scamper about playing and trying to raid the bird feeders. Great post!

Fabulous shot, John! The clarity is sensational on this shot. The red squirrels chase the gray ones away in my yard.

You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Red squirrels are in decline over in the UK mate!...it is the greys that are overtaking them..government is killing off the greys, so the reds can survive! .. apparently it was a disease from the greys that made the reds in decline!..(imported from the USA I have to say!) ..now that the 'history lesson is done!..the image is a cracker and well taken! .. you captured it 'spot-on'! ...great colours too!

In Poland we do not have any gray squirrels [yet LOL] but thousands of little, swift as wind squirrels which do not have any single white hair on their cute and completely red bodies !!! And I never ever got close enough even to take my camera - they are far too quick for Boo boo as well !
This looks absolutely lovely !!! Congratulations, dearest John !!!

A lovely sharp and clear image - perfection!

Hello John....Yet another great picture of wild life from you my friend...Wildlife comes in many forms and can be found within a short distance of nearly anyone's home, even in your own backyard as you have proved with the pictures of birds, and various songbirds you have in your gallery....Give yourself a pat on the back....Well done and keep these wildlife pictures coming...All the best....Mick.

He must be totally in seventh heaven with all those nuts surrounding him..no wonder he sat so still for you!! He loves you..you feed him soooo well!! Verena

this is such a great photo. he's like a little man (or she, but a woman?). it's such a simple photo, yet your subject has so much character. a lot of the squirrel photos here make me think, "so what, a squirrel", but your pic actually has meaning. i love it.

btw, what lens did you use? a macro?
