This is the Aude Gate of the city of Carcassonne. The Aude is the river that flows past the base of this hill. Carcassonne was the seat of the Trencavel family - heretic counts and victims of the Albigensian Crusade which swept through this region in the 12th century.

Besieged for an extended period, Carcassonne showed no sign of falling to the king's armies until by stupid chance the inhabitants sortied out to attack the king, and though they almost got him, they left the city gate open, and Carcassonne fell to the invaders. Its walls still stand, and are a most amazing relic of this period before Innocent III, bishop of Rome killed all his political opposition and became the infallible Pope.

When the white man discovered this country, Indians were running it. No taxes no debt, women did all the work. White man thought he could improve on a system like this.

But words are things, and a small drop of ink, falling, like dew, upon a thought produces that which makes thousands, perhaps millions think and smile. Art is everywhere, except it has to pass through a creative mind.

All kinds of bad things can happen when you forget to lock that front door. Glad to see the state of preservation here, perhaps the town understands what they have in the way of legacy and tourism. It's a beautiful shot rambling down the hill to the town like that.

I've been there in a long trip I made up through France starting from Bologna till Biarrritz in the France Atlantic coast, all by car. The arrival in Carcassone was fantastic and history about the crusades and the fighting against Cathars is very interesting.
Great. I really like,
Ed.

Great photo - great architecture - great history - thanks so much for the submission... almost 4 years ago! I'm surprised I never spotted it before. The irony in the photo is the cluster of wind generators on that rise in the distance, a complete contrast in character but similar in appearance to this cluster of medieval towers.
