The Cicada holding on to it's shell that he has lived in underground for 2-17 years. Why the big difference in years I have no idea but that is what the description says in my narrative off the internet in this image of him maybe it depends on the the type of cicada? Here he is drying his wings out, It was amazing to watch this transformation. I wonder what he thought of us staring at him up close Lol! I did not hurt him either I just let him be, it's all a part of nature and what she has to offer, ( I would have squashed him before I got into photography) Lol! I watched him as he made his way up the Maple tree and kept changing in appearance.

Now how many of you remember this song I remember doing a gym routine to this song some years ago. :)

Thanks in advance for the comments and I hope your enjoying my series on these weird but interesting looking critters.

Beautiful, Sandi. They sure look better after emerging than they do before, don't they? ...I remember that song. Cream was Eric Clapton's original group, I believe.

I have a hard time finding these guys pretty, Sandi! lol I remember hoardes of these in Md. They came every seven years and I remember crunching on their shells when walking down the street. Good shot though.

Sandi, hope you don't have the same sentiments when mosquito's come out their shells, lol.

Great post again. Your narrative is very interesting too.

Wonderful capture Sandi ... it looks like the locust doesn't want to let go of it home of 2 - 17 years. Love those blue-green wings. I can tell this was a great experience for you. Well done & I do remember that song.

The wings really make this shot special Tigz. Great closeup and I can't help but think of the movie "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." I don't remember that song. Must have been long after I graduated. Can you still do that gym routine? :)

Excellent post.
