Here is something really different coming from me. :)

My girlfriends daughter asked me take some pictures of her. Even though I'm not really into taking this type of picture, I obliged. I figure it is a learning curve, so I did this as a favor for her, and her mom. I had done the same for Jessica's brother before too. Not professional by any means, but saves them alot of dollars, and gives me some experience. Just a note that Jessica was rather cold as it was about 10:00 in the morning and only in the 40's for the temperature and a bit breezy. :)

I do have their permission to use her picture.

I used the canon 40D with the sigma 17/70 lens.

That's a beautiful shot of the pretty young lady. Are you going into fashion or model photography? LOL.

You do nice work and I had no doubt that you'd overcome the learning curve, Sandi. Fantastico!

Just lovely!....both the girl and the image...

A tip!....if you get the chance again...lose the railings Sandi...and photograph the girl on the steps!

The fence/railings is an added distraction...which should not 'hide' the 'model!

Simple backgrounds and settings are the norm for 'model shots'!..

I think Bob is very correct (as always) about the railing. But, Sandi, I like it and the picture as sort of a "Beauty and the Beast." She being the Beauty and the aging and "needing repairs" building as the Beast. If she is the subject, and probably was, then as Bob said, an unobscured picture, such as her on the steps, would be great. If the composition theme was a contrast of now and then, beauty and the beast, then I think you have a winner.

Jessica is a lovely young lady and you have done her beauty full justice with this photo Sandi. The lighting is perfect. No shadows of the railing on her body.

To me the result of your 'attempt' is good Sandi, but I think you can improve this kind of work by using the very good advice from Owd Mucker Bob. One is never too old to learn, isn't it?

Let me not forget to mention what's important too: Jessica is a spontaneous young lady with lots of charm!

Regards, Cornelius.

This is a great shot Sandi for a spontaneous portrait - I do agree with OB but I also am with you I don't photograph people very much and don't have a lot of experience in that area.

You did a nice job with this capture Sandi. Everyone else has made their critiques but I would like to give you a little commendation for being able to get the lighting as well as you did. Black clothing is a tough subject in photographing people. There is a good bit of shadow but you didn't have a reflective surface to fill in for it. Maybe using a fill flash at the lowest possible setting would help.

A very nice shot Sandi. It's hard to take a bad shot of a pretty girl though. To me, there's good, and there's better. You got some relevant advice from the gallery too. My first instinct would be to simplify the background, and have her standing far enough in front of it that a low f/stop will blur it out. The large aperture will minimize the plane of focus and isolate her more in the image too. Also, don't always put her in the center of the image. Try to have a balancing element, whether an object, shadow, vista, whatever, that compliments her. Walk through a scene with her in your minds eye. How would she look here? Or here? Kinda vague, I know. Just leave yourself open to the possibilities. That's my 2 cents anyway.

Good work with the young lady's portrait, Sandi. Other people have handed out some great advice for shooting people. I hope I can remember half of it should I ever need it.

You did well Sandi.
I like the pose very much - it has an immediacy and a casual look. I get the impression she has just come out through the door and is delighted to see her visitors
