I was thrilled to finally see some butterflies on my last visit to the Calendar gardens on Thursday.

We are in the month of Sept. and finally I got to see them, and get some pics.

This is the Painted Lady, and notice what good shape she is in, so late in the season. I wonder if our crazy weather (bad winter) late spring has got things messed up for them. I have only seen 2 Monarchs, and 1 Eastern Swallowtail, and have not managed a pic.

I know the Monarchs are in danger of habitat loss, and not sure about the swallowtail. I really hope they are more in abundance next season.

When I took this capture I had the camera set up for flash, used the canon 70-300 IS USM lens, and camera was in AV mode with an f/stop of 5.6, focal length 300. Not sure just how much the flash did, but I left it up..

Thank you for the comments, have a nice day.

I wish I was a Glow Worm, a Glow Worm's never glum, 'cause how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?

Excellent shot of the butterfly with such clear details. The flash must have helped. Here they don't allow flash in the butterfly park

Your choices worked perfectly Sandi. Such fine detail is illuminated. Detail is good from butterfly to flower. Good depth and blurring achieved with the longer lens. I have wondered about the plight of the butterflies this year as well. They just don't seem in abundance as they were last year. It seems that the late cold snap in Spring snapped them off.

Life's moments are sweet. I just want to capture all that I can of them.

Another beauty, Sandi. It's difficult to recognize Flash Fill as the camera computer reads the light meter settings, generally over a wide range, and comes up with a setting for the flash. Look at the very tip of the far wing. The tiny markings along the outer edge as well as pinpoints of light are evenly lit.
Next time you have a subject for Flash Fill, do the first shot without a Flash
and then pop it up for the next shots. You still may not see much of a difference on your camera screen. Just check them out on full screen at home.
The results can be very subtle depending on the number of points the light meter is reading, and should you have the metering set to just a single Central point you should run some test shots to see the results.

Best one that I've seen in a very long time Sandi! Excellent use of a, so called, 'fill-in flash' too. Kudos!

Regards, Cornelius.

Butterflies have been scarce around here as well, Tigz. I too am unsure as to the reason.
I am not unsure about this photo. It is well done in all aspects.

This is a little eerie as I just viewed Jeff's Painted Lady on a purple flower. Superb image.

i think i read that flash is effective from 12-16ft(depending) dont told me to it though. i now with 300mm you had to be 9ft away or focus was impossible. im sure it had an effect my friend! i read snapshooters comment & i believe i see what he is talking about from this 1600x1200..so theres your proof!

i do like this one but prefer #2 better because of the angle on the butterfly & the more green background..just seems to make it pop more for me.

I like the underside of their wings better than topside. Again, nice capture.

Another breath taking close up showing us the true beautiful and elegant butterfly, they sure have gorgeous markings and colours, you've capture him in a outstanding pose. I feel like I can reach right in and touch his soft wings.
