I spotted this area at the end of June on my way to our 40th wedding anniversary dinner. It's an area of wetlands I've photographed before - that evening would have been a great shot but for the rain and no camera. At that time the baby herons were in all these nests you see and adults herons were flying in and feeding them. The nests are about 4 feet across and herons always build them in swampy areas with dead trees. Alas when I finally got back there it was daytime and young and adult herons were out fishing no doubt. There were a dozen nests and it's my understanding they will come back to the same nests every year until the tree falls apart. Next year I hope to get birds in the nests. It's a difficult area in which to get a shot as the closest I can get is to stand at the edge of a busy state highway that runs next to the swamp - the winds from the semi trucks whizzing by behind me almost knocked me over.

I like this even without them in shot, but I do hope you can get some next year. I say that you were brave to stand alongside the highway to get this, a you got a great shot. tigs=^..^=

You need to be careful out there. It is a wonderful shot without the Heron's.
I've never seen anything like this, so thanks for posting.

People are like cameras--sometimes they lose focus.

Excellent well composed shot! Watch out for those semi trucks, they can be tricky with the winds they create.

Kathy, my advice is to buy a drone with a camera attached on it, 😜 !
Just kidding of course. Although the progression goes on, using these 'tools' will diminish the attractiveness and tension of a photo shoot.
In spite of a not that optimal image, therefore I prefer to accept the conditions as they are.
Good and interesting shot however!

I have only once ever seen this..(Lots of Herons in trees)...It was on a river/lake cruise some years back...
A great opportunity, and you did a grand job of photographing them in their environment!

Unusual and nice shot with all those nets there high up on the trees. Well composed shot Kathy.

A good picture with an excellent narrative. I photograph a lot of Herons but I dont think I have ever come across a nest.

Quite an interesting shot of the heron nests and narrative Kathy - just be careful next year should you decide to shot the herons in their nests - I, myself, see shots along narrow roads or highways but think it's not worth the risk life and limb - btw - Happy 40th anniversary and Great Capture:-):-):-):-):-)!!!!!
