Artist Spotlight #22

Submitted by Piner 01/21/07 12:57 AM GMT

The first of this year's Artist Spotlights features a member that started with posting computer graphics, but then moved on to photography and he has really excelled in that medium. Without further ado, let me introduce to you, the person whose parents named him Carl, but we all know him as d_spin_9. Be sure to browse through his gallery and leave him some feedback on his works.

Thank you everyone for the nominiation.

Now I will observe tradition, and tell you all the boring details of my existence and involvement with this site.

I am a 2nd year Mech Engineering student at the University of Calgary. (yes, living at home) . I have been posting to this website for almost 3 years now. I began more with the CG kinda graphics stuff, but soon grew bored of that and got into more serious photography. I use a Nikon D70, with a 50mm 1.8, a Sigma 10-20mm, and the Nikkor 80-200 2.8. its all great stuff, and an expensive hobby, as I'm sure most of you are aware.

Lately my photography has slowed somewhat, this could be attributed to many causes, few of which are symbiotic with photography. XC-skiing, canoeing, and Rock Climbing are pretty much the only activities of mine which are photogenic. Other than that I am kept busy with one of the following:

-Girlfriend (the one and only Kim)

-InterVaristy Christian Fellowship (think university youth, lotsa fun)

-Homework (but that's overrated anyways)

-Squash

-Volleyball

-Soccer

-Piano (ya right, I never do that anymore)

My most favorite artist on this site is Milo_Anderson. I've known him since before I could walk, so I'll admit it's not really fair to the rest of you. I would tell you all his real name, but he probably wouldnt appreciate it. Other than that, there's a lot of amazing artists here, however I'd mostly know only the ones who've been around over a year, so i'll refrain from putting out a limited list of all the great artists here.

Of my images the favourites are generally the ones already ranked high by that crazy C-index thing they use. there are a few exceptions like "Sun, Snow, Water, Ice" and "barb" but I can understand why these dont win in the popular opinion.

Thanks, Carl

Hoi Carl !
First of all a big congratulations to be in the spotlight this month.
It is strange, but untill now, i had not come accross any of your work, goes to show how much there is to see here.
Beeing in the spotlight, i had to check out your gallerie pages.
I was pleasantly surpriced to find a lot of mountain images, those are allways a favorite of mine, and do post a lot myself in this subject.
When i have more time, i will go back to your gallery and view the lot more closely and full size.
Congrats again, and a great choice from Piner.

Hans.

Hey Carl,

A well deserved recognition and I am quite proud that a fellow Canadian is the recipient this time round.

You are a fantastic ambassador behind the lens for our country's landscapes and settings. You (and what's his name? :oP ... your good friend Milo) have contributed to the betterment of this site ... and I commend you in carrying yourself well.

And you are most gracious to make mention of that friendship and once again, show the true spirit of being a member here.

Enjoy your time in the spotlight and I hope you continue along your path of discovery behind the camera's eye. Congratulations.

Signed,

A fellow Canucklehead (aka Les).

Hello Carl! What a great spot to find you.... the spotlight!! I have many of your sparkling images stored on my hard drive-14 of them to be exact! My most favorite is the series you did with the water lily. But running a close second is the silhouette of the boat with the purple/pinks. You have an incredible talent and one day I hope to open a photography magazine or some other form of public acknowledgement and be able to say that "I knew him when"..lol...seriously, I think you have an eye for the excellent shots and a gift with your talents of the arts. I feel privileged to 'know' you here at caedes.net.
Good luck with whatever you choose to pursue in your future and enjoy your time in the spotlight. You definitely deserve it!
Thanks for sharing your gift with me ;=)

Hello Carl, my oh my, what a deligthtful and captive audience you had in me, while viewing your gallery! It was a most pleasant experience, as I found your gallery to be so full of marvelous and skillfully taken photos, so well presented, and so wonderfully exciting! Excitement flavored with great color, action, physically strong with athleticism, and interesting in composition!

I have not had the pleasure of meeting you, or have I seen your gallery to date! I am very glad I had this opportunity!

I remain fascinated by all of your photos, but especially enjoyed 'Breaking Trail', and the struggle you had capturing the ants, 'Mayhem'! Your intense efforts paid off, and you conquered the persistant little 'workers', in which case you deserve further credit! LOL! If the queen had been among them, well...............she may have been too shy to pose....

Congratulations Carl, to a well deserved honor! You should wear the recognition with pride! Marilyn

Hello Carl....well since I've been in caedes for over two yrs now, does that mean you "know me"?! lol But all kidding aside, I've always really enjoyed yur postings. You have a very unique way of helping us all to "see" differently and that therefore teaches us to try more things and to observe and enjoy even more. Currently I have your 'Grassy Jewel' on my screen serving as my beautiful desktop. And your photo called
Valley Meadow at Sunset' is totally gorgeous !! I am a lover of sunsets since I live at the gorgeous Pacific Ocean..and your photos are fantastic...I could go on and on endlessly naming the ones that are my most favorite, but there are really too many, I probably would end up giving the thumbs up on all of them! LOL So I'll stop at this point. But I do know one thing, I've truly enjoyed and loved your photos and have often taken a deep breath of total pleasure as I sat mezmerized by many of them. It's something to be proud of...to have the focus on you in the Artists Spotlight. Thank you ever so much, and just keep showing us the earths beauty..I for one, will always love your photos...and most likely will also ask you if it's ok to do a canvas painting of some of them now and then...Verena

Hey...i got one more thing to say: "I use a Nikon D70, with a 50mm 1.8, a Sigma 10-20mm, and the Nikkor 80-200 2.8."

I use a (shared with my dad): D50, 50mm 1.8, Sigma 18-35, and 80-200 2.8....thats...kindof scary.

Congrats! I browsed through your gallery and thought you must be in Canada with all those photos of snow and ice! I lived most of my life in warm climate and two years ago moved to NE Washington State (only 20 miles from Canada). You do a great job of capturing the beauty of snow and ice that I am still just discovering.
