Code of Conduct Additions

Submitted by caedes 07/15/04 11:43 PM GMT

I have made a few small changes to the Code of Conduct to clarify some issues. The main point is that it is against the rules for anyone to actively use more than one username on the site, and it is VERY against the rules to use mutiple usernames to unfairly cast mutiple votes on images. I can very easily produce a list of all users which use mutiple usernames, cheat on voting, and cheat on favorites lists. The Mods and I have been discussing this and agree that we can not tolerate this behavior any more. If you think that you may be one of the users that I am referring to, just stop the activity and there won't be any repercussions for you.

I am incredulous that any of the regular members would seek to improve their rankings by using extra user names.

I presume that things like the Cadres Padres and Guesstheartist are still fine? From the Code, it looks as though you are referring to regular misuse.

I am curious though - can you be sure this is happening in every case? Not so long ago, my IP address was blocked from the site and I had to get you to unblock it. I had done nothing wrong and yet it still happened.

To give an example: I used to play an online game called Kings of Chaos (I wouldn't recommend it, by the way). My brother, who lives about 20 miles away also played it. We had massive problems because their website thought we were the same person with the same IP address - something to do with the fact that we both have the same ISP (I don't pretend to understand the technical details). The point is: how can you be sure that people are definitely logging on with multiple IDs?

That said, I am glad to see that you are cracking down on it if it is happening - there is simply no reason to use multiple IDs.

Totally agree with whole the comment Matthew! The same happend with me, with the game Soldiers of Fortune2..but that's another story. They thought I was cheating by using a bot. A bot is meaned, that the computer does all the works for you, so you always win. I didn't but they banned my whole IP range.
Hope it never happens with caedes.net ;)

It is true that you can't be totally sure of misuse based on only ip addresses, however there are other more reliable methods that I'll be using in the future.

At first I was going to say I'm shocked, and then I thought about it and realized I'm not surprised at all, but disappointed. I'm glad Caedes and the moderators are taking a stand on it, it's ridiculous.

I have to agree, Bob. After my initial shock & anger, I wasn't that surprised. It is something that needs to be dealt with swiftly because it undermines the whole fabric of the Caedes community.
I have never logged on with more than one ID (apart from Guesstheartist) and I think it is right that we put a stop to it.

Well, I can't lie. I do have another ID on caedes.net, it's SnowFireEagle. To tell you the truth though, I only have it because I liked the name. I don't use it, and if there's a way to get rid of it than I'd be happy. I hope this doesn't mean kicking me off the site for having another ID. I never used the ID to get more votes or anything like that though!

I have another user name coming from my IP, but it is my wife. She hardly ever visits the site though, so I doubt you are referring to me. I have been rather inactive as of late anyways. Just thought I'd throw my voice into the mix.

Did the upload limit change also, mine now says that Caedes Cadre members can only upload 2 images in 20hrs...
Didn't it used to be 4 images in 24 hrs.?

edit: Nevermind, found the relevant info in the discussion board.
Thanks!

June,
Just don't vote on each other's images or put them in your favorites and there will be no false appearance of cheating.

Tom, I could be wrong, but I don't think it will matter if June or her daughter vote on each other's images (after all, it would be kind of weird if they didn't).

My interpretation (and I may be wrong) is that Caedes is referring to users who have many alternate ID's expressly for the purpose of cheating. Those alternate ID's would (presumably) not leave comments or post pictures, just vote on one user's images.

On another discussion Caedes said "I didn't say that there were a lot of people cheating, but the ones who were cheating were cheating a lot".

Perhaps Caedes could confirm this?

I have 3 user names in my household, is it against the rules for Marlene or my daughter to vote on my pictures or for me to vote on theirs? Because if it is, I would have to say that is unfair to the artist to get a vote from another user. We only have 1 computer and we do share it all together. There has to be away for Caedes to work something out about this problem, but it does need to be fair to families with other members names. Caedes, do you have a plan for this comment? This is a great site and I'm proud to be on here. I just can't see a way of fixing this problem at the moment. Maybe Caedes could put a stop to only 2 or 3 users names per household and after that there should be a block from entering anymore users names for that household. I'm fresh out of ideas at the moment. Thanks for any comments on this.

I also have one other family memeber on the same computer - and partner on another machine - that occasionally uses the site...just wondering whether personal messages will enquire before it is assumed people are cheating? I don't want to labour the point, but I also don't want to silently be branded a cheat! Just wanted to know whether the multiple user issue has already been addressed and acted on?

I am pretty knowlegable about computer/network security and I am also getting a degree in it. I think that it can be very easy to catch these people. Having the same IP address can be a major factor, although not conclusive. I think that another way in which you can detect this, is if the account that is suspected to be a "Abuse" account made votes to only one user, and made almost nil comments, and contributed no works at all. Also voting for one person's entire gallery in a short period of time. It can seem primitive, but it seems logical.
