NoahNott's Version of the FAQ:

Q: What image sizes are OK to upload?
A: Any size ratio up to 3000x3000px (pixels). You can upload 1600x1200, 1280x800, 3000x50, 150x 2948....whatever!

Q: How can I set one of the fine works of art as a wallpaper (background) on my computer!?

A: Windows/PC/whatevertheyrecalled: Select the wallpaper of your preference. On the image's page, select your computer's resolution (right beneath the thumbnail). Once the image is loaded, right click the image and select "Set as Desktop Background."

Mac/Apple/whateveritscalled: Sorry, this exceeds my knowledge base. Try control + click though.

*note* You can figure out your screen's resolution by going to: My Computer --> Control Panel --> Display --> Settings (or something along those lines). See the little slider thing with some numbers like '193843 x 192823', or something like that...yeah...those number's show your resolution.

Q: What free photomanipulation programs do you know of?
A: I've just learned of a new one, you dont even have to download it onto your computer. It only does simple edits, such as changing the canvas size, image size, brightness, etc. Fauxto is the name. You can also use any of these: The GIMP, Infranview, or Photofiltre.

As for not the so free programs, you can try Photoshop (CS2...CS3 comming out soon) or PaintShop Pro (which I personally have used like...once...). Photoshop is by far the most complex/powerful photo editing - thing! Like it is the the prized invention of mankind...it's...it's...AMAZING! The program basically lets you play 'god' - if you will. I cant compare it with the other softwares b/c (because) I've never used the 'other softwares'.

Q: How do I change the size of my image?

Scenario 1: Say your camera takes pictures at a resolution of 3200x2400 pixels and you upload it. Most likely, Caedes.net will not accept this. Why O WHY!?
A: Upload all your images to a preferable size of 1600x1200. To do this (on a PC), download The GIMP, Infranview, or Photofiltre. Then find a button in one of those programs that says something along the lines of 'resize image.' Using the program's help guide can help you to find that. Resize to 1600x1200pixels, not inches, or centimeters, etc.

Scenario 2: I have resized an image to 1600x1200 pixels and it's squished! What do I do!?
A: You will have to either crop some of the image so that the 'aspect ratio' (the ratio of the height to width which should be 4:3), or upload a squished image. After you crop some of the image off so that the 'ratio' is 4:3, then resize to a preferable size of 1600x1200.
Your second choice is to make a border around the photo. To do this, first resize your image to 1600x_____px, and make sure the 'aspect ratio' button is checked. On my camera, i end up with 1600x1024. To fill in the extra space above and below the image, click 'canvas size' or something along those lines, and make it 1600x1200. That will make an even 'border' on the top and bottom of the image.

Scenario 3: WOAH! I resized my image but it ended up being 1600x1024. What do I do!?
A: Same as the scenario 2...you must crop some of the image or make a border around the image.

Q: How do I make blue links?
A: Read the FAQ. You can either copy the 'code' that is on that page or you can memorize it...memorizing is faster. Just a couple of pointers:
Make sure use the 'http://' before your link
Make sure you use quotes ["] around your link.

Q: I would like to make bold, italicized or underlined words. How do I do this?
A Use the same idea as making links. Replace the parenthesis [( and ]) with carrots [< and >]
For bold: (b) word (/b)
For underlining: (u) word (/u)
For italics: (i) word (/i)

Q: How do I change the font size?
A: You can not...*turns towards the site admin*...but you can.

Q: Why are some of my images shown only full size eg: 1600x1200
A: A new thing where archived images will only show the full size version unless otherwise requested.

Q: What are archived images?
A: It explains in the official FAQ. It's also filled with other important info. Also look here .

Q: Why Noah, why!? Why did you make this thread?
A: I have no school today and I have nothing better to do. :-S

Q: I have recieved a comment on one of my images...what do i do!?
A: 1) Go to that person's 'user page' (click on their picture/avatar or their name), then say thank you etc etc. (Lots of ppl do this)
2) Do nothing
3) Send them a PM
4) Comment on one of their images in return for commenting on yours.
5) etc.

Q: What are subscriptions?
A: 'Subscriptions' show up on the left side of the screen under "Jobs" when you get one. There will be a list of subscriptions, or new comments to those subscribed pages.
To subscribe to a page/discussion/image, click on "subscribe" under the first comment, or under the image.
You are automatically subscribed to all your new uploads and to all threads created by you.

Q: How quickly will somebody respond to a question that I ask?
A: On the weekdays, any thread you start asking a question about something (like, how to resize an image!), it shouldent take to long to get an answer (within a the hour usually, if not within 5 minutes)...if it's an 'easy question' that any Caedesian could answer.
On the weekends, less people are on caedes so you might have to wait a couple seconds, few minutes, or even a day for a question to be answered.

Q: Does anyone use the chatroom?
A: Hardly ever do you see another member in the Caedes chatroom.

Q: Woah! I saw this person walking around the mall with a Caedes sweater! Where did he/she get it!?
A: First, you did not see a person walking around the mall with a Caedes sweater...they are rare. =P Really, actually, to buy Caedes merchandise, go to the Caedes Shop of Horrors @ cafepress.com.

Q: How do you know all of this!? You're a genius.
A: Almost all the info is already in the FAQ and the 'Other Stuff' sections of the website. The rest can be found on one of the links under "Navigation."

Q: I have a camera that uses film. How would I post the images that I take on Caedes?
A: I'm not good with this subject matter, but this is how i would go about doing it.
Take your developed negatives to a place where they devlop scans. What 'places' do this? A photoshop (not the program) or places like Walmart/Target/etc sometimes can scan for you. You will most likely have to so some photo editing when they hand them back to you, like adjust the color, size, etc.
Your second choice is to buy a film scanner (if you are planning on scanning a ton of pictures, this *might* be a good investment). The problem with this method is that sometimes scanners don't scan very good (bad resolution, bad color, bad etc).
Here's how I do it: Take a cheap digital camera that has a macro setting, hold up the negative/slide up to a fluorescent light and take the picture. Of course the quality will not be that good, but for an example result (handheld), look at some of these images. Note that those were slides. If you had negatives you would have to use a photo editing program to reverse the negative (i personally have not tried this but I'm pretty sure this will work).
*Anyone who know's more on this subject, a link/etc would be nice*

Q: Which is better: Film or Digital?
A: No idea. It matters who you ask. KenRockwell.

Q: What exactly is the 'c-index'?
A: Simple. If you get a 54:100 c-index on one of your images, that is an 'average' (but not really an average) from all the votes that people gave in the voting booth. Higher the number, the better it is (in theory).

Q: What if I want to share my artwork with people that I know? Like, what website do I send them to?
A: Simple, just tell your friend: [your user name].caedes.net. So if I told somebody to come visit my gallery, I would say go to: noahnott.caedes.net. :-D

"Idiots" guide to Caedes? Is that how you view newbies who are not yet familiar with the site and have questions? Hmmmmmmmm. <G> (BTW, the list is very well done.)

I have one suggestion with respect to Frequently Asked Questions. Don't know about the rest of you, but it took me awhile to examine all of the links on the left side of the Caedes.net website. I'm wondering if the FAQ under "Navigation" might be noticed more if the links were posted right under the introductory paragraph on the Caedes.net Home Page. Could be that a couple of other topics under "Navigation" might be noticed more if included there as well. Just a suggestion, since those who've been here a while seem to be short on tolerance for repeat questions. Wen

you may want to consider mentioning Photoshop at some juncture - lots of chat about image editing software but not much said of the Adobe mountain :-)

I cant really say anything about it. See that's why I write the "Idiot's Guide to Caedes" and Caedes writes the "FAQ". =P
