Backlighting refers to the main source of light being behind the subject in the image. In other words, the main light is positioned in such a way that it faces the viewer. Backlighting can give a "glow" to the subject or creates silhouettes. Such lighting does not have to be limited to photographs.
The real challenge in "backlighting" would be to submit a photo in which the backlighting itself does not dodge away all the details, the way that quick snapshot portraits often do. It takes skill and maybe a little fill flash to accomplish that. The "backlighting" theme would demonstrate skills that most of these other themes would not, more than simply a photo op.
