Years ago many farmers started their own seed companies and sold strains of their own seeds and also seeds from other companies. The world wasn't as mobile back then and these type of seed businesses took care of most of the local farmers. It must have been very successful, because the rural landscape is dotted with privately owned seed companies. Most are out of business, such as this one,but several remain as distributors for larger seed companies.

The pride of a once successful venture shows in the care of this old building. It overlooks a huge valley where the cropland is flat and fertile. Much of the row cropping has been replaced by cattle and hay farms. A new era of corporation farming is slowly causing the family farm to disappear. Sad but true.

My Dad ran his farm when I was younger but the big business eventually edged us out. At the time I was glad to get out of such hard work, but now looking back I see how sad it truly was to be edged out. Neighbors farms soon began being replaced by sub-divisions and the farms are gone. That is a beautiful building and good capture, Tick.

It always is sad when you see a era you have been part of evaporate in front of your eyes. Be it a blacksmith, a miller, or today's farmers. How many brands of cars that went up and down Main Street when we were kids are made anymore? I do not like the word "progress." It seldom lives up to its name.

Excellent capture in the details of the red brick. I also like all the varied textures. I see the golfer there, maybe hoping the grass is greener on the other side of the fence.

The building looks prominent and proud, as your vantage point shows!..

A shame as modern society has now overtaken the old customs, now everything seems to 'Be Rushed'

Owd Fella Tick (OFT), you're a good photographer who provides us with interesting and often typical photos. You're also a good storyteller, with the understanding that you don't tell us fairy tales, but the, often unpleasant, current reality.
This beautiful entry is an excellent example of this. For that reason, it should be categorized as a contribution to the photojournalism gallery.

I had no idea there were so many seed companies back then, but it makes sense... Who would know better as to what grows best within a particular region's climate and ground/water conditions, than the local seed brokerage?

Nice one here, Cap'n...Faved

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Beautifully maintained building Tick - love the shade of red - I've heard of these rural seed companies - too bad they were forced to close when Monsanto arrived on the scene - and to quote Forrest Gump - That's all I have to say about that!!!!!!!!!!!!!
