Now our tour leads us to a beautiful gorge - the Wasserloch Gorge of Palfau: The Wasserloch of Palfau, a gigantic karstic spring, is situated amidst a rock face difficult to access south of the Hochkar mountain. The water-bearing cave hidden behind is the largest in the province of Styria and one of the most magnificent karstic phenomena of Austria. The length of the gorge, from the spring to the confluence with the Salza river, is 900 metres, the difference of altitude is 300 metres. The track through the gorge is well adjusted to the natural environment. It is easy to walk because of wooden stairs and bridges. Here the water can be observed “at work”. The Waterloch gorge with its narrow passages deeply cut into the rock by the water, the potholes and five magnificent waterfalls equalling 152 metres in total height, is one of the most spectacular sites in Austria.
