Yes, believe it or not, that's its name. It is a common new tropical spider found throughout the south. I heard the spikes developed over time to scare predators from eating it They would cause it to get stuck in the throat. Lettuce Lake,2016.

Oychhh! I can believe that. What a freaky looking little dude. A "new" tropical spider? Are you saying that it hasn't been in florida for a long time? Possibly migrated to the U.S. in banana crates like some other species, perhaps? I remember visiting a state park in NE Oklahoma back in 2005 and, walking between two trees, running smack into the largest and toughest spider web i have ever seen. I literally had to grab a and tear it apart so I could get through. Afterwards I realized I really didn't want to meet the critter that could make a web like that. A good and "braver-than-me" capture, Alex.

---to scare predators from eating it---

Although I'm not a predator, no thanks, Alex. It's on the contrary, so I hope that it's not on its way to me now, ☺ .
Good distant 'portrait' of this 'handsome' critter, my friend!

Great capture Alex. If I'm not mistaken these little spiders are pretty small. You really got a good magnification on it. I once took a picture of one such spider and it seemed to have a face on its back. It looked like a smiley face.

Not a big fan of creepy crawly but a excellent capture.

The reason why the sun sets in the evening is because it wants to see the sunrise in the morning. I rise in the morning because I want to see them both. RvdB
