Jimbob - You mistaken a yawn for this polar bear sizing up whether it will take one chomp or two to eat the arms of the guy taking photos. :-) Great comp, dof, background and lighting to show off this big animal. Thad
These big bears of the north have allways amazed me. You did him justice and I like it that even though you are at a zoo, you can rarely tell it. Well done.
Since winter time is coming, one might think that she's preparating for hibernation. But polar bears don't hibernate. Only a pregnant female is in a deep winter rest in which she awakes from time to time. So I think, in order to give us more information, you should go back to the zoo, Jimbob, to ask her whether she is pregnant or not, lol.
I just received my new lens and accessories. As I've mentioned previously, the zoo here sucks melons; so I'm headed to the Arctic Circle tonight for some close up's of the polar bears. I want to blend in with the surroundings and confuse the polar bear population; so I'm going to soak my clothes in seal oil so that they just think I'm a seal and leave me alone. It's a plan that can't fail.
In case I've never mentioned this a thousand times, your zoo shots are fabulous. This one is a beaut. Do you have some sort of annual pass or do you live at the zoo?

Some people have Gurus, I have my camera. Through the cam lenses I have learnt to deeply perceive life, not only to see, but to look at all expressions of nature, becoming able to read the poetry of the flowers, receiving the embrace of the trees and flying above the clouds without wings! - Susie Sun
