Sometimes calmness can be deceiving . . . . Everyone in our town knows that small sharks sometimes enter our beautiful little harbour but I have never heard of any attacking - until yesterday. A 13 year old girl was attacked by a 6 foot Broadnose Sevengill Shark. Fortunately she is ok - she has 52 stitches in her arm and back, not pleasant but could have been so much worse. These sharks are happy in as little as 1 metre of water and they cruise along the sea bed. They have teeth like a saw and are very very fast. The jetty on the left of this picture is popular with young people for jumping into the water and that is where this incident happened. It is the sharks' habitat and I think many of us will have a little more respect for and fear of them after yesterday.

Oh my I'm glad she is okay! It's always wise to scan the shoreline first, and even then you might not see them. Lyn I like the image well done! tigs=^..^=

This doesn't seem like a good spot for swimming so I question why she jumped in the water. I'm glad she is ok but what a terrible experience for her. The shot is excellent.

Sorry to hear of this attack, for the youngster and her family, but any time we enter the water, like the bush, we are entering some critter*s territory, and they don*t know from kids or good intentions. Looking at the water here I*m assuming those dark spots are either sea floor plants, or possibly rays (the one in the bottom center is shaped a bit like a ray).

Lyn, even if one is careful and scan the environment for danger, one can't prevent such a trauma. Like 'Nik' says, an animal that feels threatened doesn't question whether the swimmer has good intentions, but uses its instinctive defenses.
Fortunately, it ended relatively well for the girl.
Very good capture however.

It is surprising that such peaceful harbor waters could hold danger in the shallows.
