I have a wild grape vine mixed with Clematis that cling to the south and west side of my house. he plants have tiny tendrils along their stems that will burrow into the tiniest cracks in the brick exterior of my house, and when it comes time to clean some of them out, it's amazing how tough the vines can be and how tenaciously they cling to the wall. They handle stucco like this the same way. If you peeled those leaves back you would see a bunch of tendrils all along the stem. A simple photo but a good one to describe one idiosyncrasy of nature.
