I was captain on the "DSR Oakland" in 1989 and again in 1991. This container vessel was on charter to Senator Lines and had a very interesting route : Around the world in 87 days! We started from Bremerhaven (Germany) calling at North European ports, then through Suez canal to Ports in Far East, then on to ports on west coast U.S., then through Panama canal to ports on east coast and back to Europe.

We always had up to 12 passengers on board - U.S. citizens who boarded at Long Beach Ca. and disembarked there after one voyage around the world in 87 days. The cost for a double cabin at that time was $10,000/- and for a single cabin $6500/ for the round trip.-

This is the second time I have posted a photo of one of my ships. The last time was here

Wow - the places you have seen in the world Raj! I'll bet there were no pirates back then. I recently watched the movie, 'Captain Phillips' and his encounter with Somali pirates. The world continues to change. Thanks for sharing, captain Raj.

So did you visit with the passengers, Raj? Have dinner with them and all that?
Sounds like a great trip. How much time were you in port?
Thanks for sharing your experiences and ship.

That's quite a trip, Raj. Did you and the crew have any amount of time on shore at the different destinations?

You had a huge responsibility as captain Raj, & I'm sure you remember those days well. I find it incredible the cost of passage on a container ship, but hey if they're prepared to pay then so be it.

Great post thanks for sharing.
