While your robins are different from ours in appearance, Richie, your house sparrows and ours are identical. I started providing a couple homes and winter feed to four of them, a number of years ago, and their flock numbers have increased. Several times during Spring, we have watched two sparrows actually wrestle each other to determine who gets the use of the front yard birdhouse. It is actually hilarious to watch. Research and experience showed me that ours do not migrate in winter, hanging out in my yard year-round, and each generation adding to the whole, what my son jokingly calls ^dads flock of flying pigs^. I have been working on my backyard for several years now, doing landscaping, demo, digging, and building, and there are lots of bare patches in which these wee fellas like to take dirt baths. The area is pocked with tiny craters left by their wings and bellies. Sometimes when I have been inside for a while, getting fresh water, a bite to eat, etc., and I return out back, a veritable cloud of them, sounding like muffled helicopters, blasts out of the ground and into the tree. I cannot expect them, after all, to realize who their benefactor actually is. They may look plain brown to some, but I think the wide variety of shapes, lines, and shades of brown in their makeup to be quite beautiful. Thanks for the great closeup and tack-sharp focus.
