The Rock of Gibraltar was one of the two Pillars of Hercules and was known to the Romans as Mons Calpe, the other pillar being Mons Abyla or Jebel Musa on the African side of the Strait. In ancient times, the two points marked the limit to the known world, a myth originally fostered by the Greeks and the Phoenicians.

Seven weeks of sea, and twice seven days of storm
Upon the huge Atlantic, and once more
We ride into still water and the calm
Of a sweet evening, screen'd by either shore
Of Spain and Barbary. Our toils are o'er,
Our exile is accomplish'd. Once again
We look on Europe, mistress as of yore
Of the fair earth and of the hearts of men.
Ay, this is the famed rock which Hercules
And Goth and Moor bequeath'd us. At this door
England stands sentry. God! to hear the shrill
Sweet treble of her fifes upon the breeze,
And at the summons of the rock gun's roar
To see her red coats marching from the hill!
Wilfrid Scawen Blunt, Gibraltar

Let us sit by a hissing steam radiator a winter's day, gray wind pattering frozen raindrops on the window,
And let us talk about milk wagon drivers and grocery delivery boys.

Let us keep our feet in wool slippers and mix hot punches--and talk about mail carriers and messenger boys slipping along the icy sidewalks.
Let us write of olden, golden days and hunters of the
Holy Grail and men called "knights" riding horses in the rain, in the cold frozen rain for ladies they loved.

A roustabout hunched on a coal wagon goes by, icicles drip on his hat rim, sheets of ice wrapping the hunks of coal, the caravanserai a gray blur in slant of rain.
Let us nudge the steam radiator with our wool slippers and write poems of Launcelot, the hero, and Roland, the hero, and all the olden golden men who rode horses in the rain.

I really like how you created the water and the waves in this one John.
I especially like the Sandburg work. I think I can visualize Hercules' Big Shoulders in your wonderful work.
Again excellent musical accompaniment.

John, in my active career, I've passed the Strait of Gibraltar many times. On these voyages the Rock of Gibraltar was a landmark. So the poem of Wilfrid Scawen Blunt brings perfectly back some memories. This nostalgic feeling is enhanced by viewing your excellent render. Realize that I've only seen a side view of the Rock. Your artistic 'bird's eye view', however is an even more finer one.

The first four lines I have experienced a number of times - the same as Cornelius wrote. When you enter the Mediterranean from the Atlantic with its heavy swells the feeling of relief is so comforting. Your excellent image makes this a wonderful post John.
