We are the door locked inside your house,
We are the things that live in your basement

Be careful not to trek too far down,
All you would see is nothing and everything

We are gone whenever you turn around,
We sound the wind that you hear at night

We are the gentle tapping at your window,
We are not there in your line of sight

Whenever you look our way,
We're not there;
We hear you every night say
“I'm not scare,”
We know that you're awake
Every night;
We are you

I am the static on your TV screen,
I am the one in the corner

Do you feel that you're safe and sound?
If so, then we would beg to differ

You cannot see what we do in the dark,
But you can hear us very faint

John, I'm not ruling out that your title is meant as a parody.
Your render is another fine example of artistic craftsmanship.
Despite your enlightening quotes and music links, I feel free to interpret what I see as I see fit. This proves the high level of this art.

[oD Hah! It certainly looks like crawdads, climbing out of dark water, but I*m also seeing their efforts to climb being stalled by a thick, oozing, petrochemical muck, coming down from above. Pretty wild.
