In the past, the fishermen of Arnemuiden, Zeeland, the Netherlands caught not only fish but shrimps as well. The shrimps were boiled on board (at sea in fresh seawater) and when their tiny wooden fishing boats were back in the harbour, peeled by their wifes and then sold, giving some extra income. Those Arnemuiden women however, are peeling the shrimps only for a folklore demonstration. Visitors could eat (all you can eat for free) the peeled shrimps and say whether the taste was good or not. When you compare the traditional clothes of those women with the traditional clothes of some women at my earlier 'folklore' posts, you will see differences. Every Zeeland island or peninsula had its own particular traditional clothes style, so Zeeland people always could see, in the past, from which island or peninsula other Zeeland people came.

Bedankt!
John

Gosh they are wonderful hats!! I am wondering if their hair is real or part of the headdress.
Any picture that makes me as hungry as this does has to be good :)
Free fresh shrimps - what heaven :)

I am enjoying your pictures of people in traditional dress Cornelius - it is a history lesson in itself. I like the way you captured these ladies busy at work and not posing - it's an excellent portrait!

Cornelius, I love the smile on the far lady's face - she knows something we don't! And I agree with Lyn, free shrimp? I would be stuck here! Great history I would have never known! ~Mary~

What an interesting concept to wear slightly different garb depending on which place you were from. Here it used to be you could tell a person's place of origin just from the accent, even if it was only a half a mile away. It's not that way any more of course, but sometimes, you'll catch someone with a pretty heavy accent. YuMMM...love shrimp and the blue of that first woman's eyes is very beautiful :)

You make us proud to be Dutch again my friend!
This is food for the anti globalist, and I like it.
I'll take all I can eat and bring back home the rest in a doggy back. It reminds me, some years ago I took my old floks to Zeeland and me and my old man were doing the "all you can eat" mussels. Man those were good days!
Thanks for those wonderful pictures.
