The reason why the sun sets in the evening is because it wants to see the sunrise in the morning. I rise in the morning because I want to see them both. RvdB

Wow... this is wild... C., you and Sandi (tigger 3) have both posted the same thing today, so I'll repeat my comment I left for her for you, with the same information.

It's actually right out traditional fairy mythology. In a fairy community, all trees are magical and sacred to them, however not all are able to feel and sense things. In fact only a few are. These are treemen and/or treewomen. Treefolk can take on human-like shape and move a short distance from their tree, or, in extreme cases, uproot the entire tree and use the roots as a shuffling form of locomotion. In this form, Treefolk are often described as resembling their tree - so that an apple treewoman might have green hair and brownish skin while an elder treeman might have eyes as purply black as berries. They can have trunk like legs, great branches for arms and have wood for skin. Oak and Ash trees are considered protective and benevolent, but Holly and Hawthorn to be the nasty variety. I believe this one you've captured is a display of the nasty type.

Although your guy here appears to be giving a hand gesture most commonly seen on our highways, between two guys disputing right-of-way. :oP

There's no place like gnome!

The city of Middelburg must have a wonderful sense of humor. Was this an actual tree stump that was turned into art, C?

Referring to Lisa's comment above: it's an artificial tree. The last time that I've visited this spot, it wasn't there. So I've sent an e-mail to the municipal officials of Middelburg in which I did a request for some information, but up till now I haven't gotten a reply.

Edit: meanwhile I got a reply. The by me depicted artificial tree is placed there temporary because of the contemporary art festival Middelburg from July 14th, 2017 till November 5th, 2017. The festival is called 'Faade 2017'. The Dutch sculptor of this contemporary artwork is Anne de Vries. When you check-out this this link, you'll see a map. The artwork has the number 12 in this map.

I also got this additional information:
The sculpture that Anne de Vries (Den Haag, 1977) has made for Faade 2017, is characteristic of his way of working. Having grown up in the world of internet, photoshop and social media, it's the most natural thing in the world for him to make and manipulate his own reality. Contact with the new media influences our perception of reality.
On the Koningsbrug in Middelburg and with the help of digital techniques, he has made a tree which is completely abstract but which has its roots in reality. The artificial tree, entitled Face Freedom looks hideous and sinister. So, not just an ordinary tree. Face Freedom wants to remind us of the reverse side of the wealth and glory of the golden age of Middelburg. Hidden behind the glorious mask is another story.

I like the tree. :-) The sculptor has great imagination.

"Having grown up in the world of internet, photoshop and social media, it's the most natural thing in the world for him to make and manipulate his own reality. Contact with the new media influences our perception of reality."

Isn't that the truth? And what is real anyway? Even without the internet our grasp of things can be distorted.

At this gnome's apartment, there is no need for a sign that says 'Visitors are not welcomed'. I doubt that I'd ring the doorbell!
