Out walking last week I came across this very sad sight. He told me his story... After growing into a nicely formed shape over the 6 or 7 years of its young life, this young tree was chosen to be the Christmas tree of a young family. He stood proudly in his corner of the room, making sure that he held up all the decoration piled on him, not even scratching his highest bough where the fairy was itching. Not a needle did he drop the whole season through. He had seen all his friends being chosen with children clapping their hands so ecstatically with glee as they were wrapped up and placed on the roof of the metal things the people rode in.

Then it was his turn. His family said he was the best they ever had, they dressed him in glittering finery and made him the best part of their house. Every day saying how beautiful he was. Then one morning, he awoke to find gifts sitting at his feet which he thought were for him, but the little ones of his family ran in and opened them instead. He couldnt help but let his branches droop a little. It was odd but after all the gifts had been opened, his family didnt seem to care about him so much. He stopped having the daily drink that his grown ups used to give him, and sometimes they even forgot to light him up. Day after day, he felt more and more neglected.

Then came a very noisy night where there were many fireworks and lots of people singing and shouting Happy New Year. People were drinking things which were making them wobbly and they kept banging into him making his decorations fall to the ground. The sadness made him sag a little more. The next morning, his woman family person came down and looked at him with a different look in her eye to the day he had arrived. She wasnt so happy he could tell, so he tried his best to look as good as that day. It couldnt have worked. " Right it has to go" she shouted over her shoulder!! Next thing he knew, he had been stripped of all his splendour, and not with the care that they were draped around him either, they were brutal. He heard his lady on the phone asking about collection what ever that was, and she shouted " I am not paying that" she slammed down the plastic thing she was holding, and advanced towards him........ He blacked out in panic and woke up in the river!!!!

His owner had thrown him off a bridge hoping that he would be washed out into the river Conwy. Maybe when the tide comes in, he will drift out from where he is stuck, and meet his destiny, untill that day though he waits .....

What a great story Jo. I enjoyed every word. The photo makes you feel even more sorry for the discarded one. I hope we hear what eventually happens to him. I can picture him ending up on a far away island.

You can't believe everything a tree tells you. "Not a needle did he drop the whole season through" - yeah right!

Maybe on a more happy ending this tree may break down into mulch and help nourish a young oak some day that will grow to be 500 years old thanks to this little discarded pine.

But then, maybe not.

nice photo here Jo,

Hello Jo....I just love your story, very good indeed...It is the simplicity of this picture that appeals to me and the detail in the tree is spot on....Well done Jo....................Mick.

Hey Jo
Oh my gosh that is sad!! I really got into that story! You tell it so well but I think we both know what that ending will be! Your a great story teller Jo and that is a very sad looking tree in your picture!
