This area is just before the quarry in Arrowhead Park which is just on the other side of that fence. You can see in this photo how close quartzite (the pinkish colored rocky areas) is to the top of the soil here. Much of it is actually exposed above the ground. It is a very hard rock and makes excellent building material, and after crushing is also used as beds for railroad tracks, and mixed with concrete to make it more durable also. Building in areas like this requires much blasting to remove it. On the left side of the picture you can see a portion of the house the retired owners of the quarry & park area reside in. They donated the land to the city for use as a park and, as part of the deal, will live their lives out there.

Quartz is fascinating - so pretty but so durable, too. This is really interesting terrain, Dan. Those folks were kind to donate this so everyone could enjoy it. Clone in a duck now!! LOL

That's an interesting story. The rock itself is very pretty and here it appears to be profuse. I wonder how much of a fortune they made in mining this mineral. Nicely composed shot, Dan. Thanks for the information that accompnies it.

Very interesting, Dan. So this beautiful rock quarry is now a park? I certainly hope for the sake of the people who donated this and who are living there still that mining operations have ceased. I don't think I'd want any heavy duty blasting going on in my back yard. :)PJ
