"Going Home" sculpted by Sondra Johnson of Nebraska. I hadn't planned on posting this one until July 4th as a sort of tribute to Independence Day. When I looked at this sculpture in person I thought how powerful and moving it was, and how much it would mean to those who have lost loved ones in wars. I didn't realize that the next day it would hit so close to home. My parents got a phone call Sunday telling them that their good friends son had been killed in combat in Iraq. It had been his second tour of duty over there, having already survived the first one. So I post this in tribute to him and to all who have lost loved ones serving in the military.

Very good post Dan and a fitting tribute to all the soldiers who have lost their lives in combat. I am truly saddened by the war and how many young and not so young men & women we have lost. Is it too high ?? Ask someone who has lost a loved one.

The statue is definitely poignant, Dan. I regret the loss of your parent's friends' son. Such a waste of precious life and who knows for what. Very moving post. Time for reflection.

You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being. - Hermes

I salute you. Those who have sacrificed. Those who have loved ones over there. Those who have lost them. Those that have given birth to them, and those who have burried them. Those who wait not knowing their fates, and those who welcome them home.
Be safe.
I salute you all.

This is a very sensitive and somber capture. I recieved that same sad news form a friend last week about her nephew. He died in iraq as well. He was only 23. This is a wonderful tribute to those we have loved and lost ot war.

My eyes are filled with tears as I write this. I wish the powers that be could truly understand what happens to the people who have to live out their battles and bear the true price of their decisions. My heart goes out to you and your parents and the folks who lost their son.

OK don't shoot me please... It's a very nice pic, but I was thinking this was for wallpaper and the dimensions are way screwy, and it looks like a snap of a truck-stop statuette against a background. I truly appreciate the sentiment, and am a veteran myself, but I expect better her to be honest.
