A quick return to Carnival In Venice for my entry into the current contest. The long-billed mask was actually used by physicians to avoid getting the plague. It would be filled with spices, pungent herbs, camphor and other strong aromatic substances, that supposedly purified the air plague victims had breathed. As always, thank you for looking and leaving a comment.

They look more scary in the black & white!.....

I would certainly turn tail and run off!

Terrific piece of work, and a beauty for the contest!

I can't imagine a doctor wearing that mask, and what it must have been like for the patient. This sure works well for the contest, and the challenge. tigs=^..^=

Wonderful B&W capture Doug, accompanied by a very interesting and explaining story (one is never too old to learn). It's a very appropriate entry for the current contest.

Wish you Good Luck with it my friend!

Wow this is very impressive and I believe the mask they were were a cymbal of a doctor many years ago .What makes me think this you my say and it is because I play a game on Xbox called assassin creed and if you are wounded you see the doctor that as a mask just like this in Florence ?.Great looking capture and in B&W it is very impressive and sharp looking to and the compstion very good as well. Just imagine see as you say a physician that looks like that you would not need anostic you would just pass out lol.

The black and white on the two carnival actors is the opposite of one another - very cool shot and narrative as well - a splendid entry for the contest - Well Done!!!:-):-):-)!!!

I just have to wonder how I would feel if I were a little kid and the doctor came into the room looking like this. I think it would scare away the plague and make me well. A great close up and great entry for the contest. Good luck.

Excellent conceptual symmetry here, Doug, in the trade-off of black and white vs. white and black... in a black & white photograph, bwaaaaaahhaaaaahhaaaaaahhaaaaaa. Sorry. The sudden realization of b&w3 pushed my gray-haired brain over the edge momentarily. A somewhat surreal subject further enhanced by the filtering effect you applied, almost medieval in nature. There's more depth in character and content here than first meets the eye. A sure contender.

An excellent entry. I think those doctors were just "practicing" medicine they hadn't quite arrived yet.

A spectacular portrait, stark and elegant. Mixing art and history can be tricky, but you've really nailed an iconic shot here. It rates high on the odd-meter and pulls the viewer in, looking for an explanation to the weirdness, but there is none. Wonderful work.
