Before I read your post, Rob, I studied some of the signs on the buildings, realizing this was taken in a Jewish section of the city. "Fishtine" was a common Jewish name at the time and, on the right, the sign between doors has a line of "Rashi script," a typeface adapted to convey Yiddish quotes in the production of Yiddish texts for women, known as vabertaytsh, literally meaning "women's Yiddish translation." Fistine's must have been a clothing store; note the placard illustrating human figures in the manner of a page right out of the old Sears & Roebuck catalogs. If it seems odd that a lad would attempt to make money in such a fashion, in the days before central heating, fireplaces were numerous and tremendously important in homes of wealthy people. Every room had one, and any house of scale would have had a "fendersmith" whose job it was to tend the fires. That's what this boy was doing... acting as a fendersmith for the wealthy Jewish families.

Between your great editing work and Knik's explanation, this is an outstanding photo Rob. At first I thought he might be an arsonist! Just kidding!

Slavery, child exploitation and cheap immigrant labor were the fuel and grease in the American machine for a very long time. Hopefully he left a better legacy than the one he inherited.
