it's difficult to describe how so many of us in massachusetts feel about the kennedys, and particularly, Senator Ted... a decade ago Bob and I were right up against disaster; as a Vietnam era vet he could no longer work and I was also disabled; we were facing homelessness and the VA juggernaut was telling us we had to wait for four years before his case could be processed, and we had already waited for two years... they were not what you'd call 'nice' to us... in desperation we wrote to our 'people' in Washington. Kennedy answered. Personally. He intervened on our behalf, sending us three letters, one of which said, in part: "I have contacted the Veterans Administration on your behalf. I requested that your correspondence be given the personal attention and consideration it merits." I can tell you there was considerable back-pedaling by the VA... we saw results within a few weeks... So, on wednesday my car sort of steered me over to hyannis port, and I think that's where I wanted to be... it was a beautiful day and I talked to many people, both visitors and natives, and took several pictures. This is one of them, a sunset image of the flag at half-mast... after I had taken it the seagull flew away, as if it were a symbol of something much larger, maybe Senator Ted's spirit leaving us at last and joining his brothers somewhere beyond life...
