The ice had started to form but wasn't strong enough to combat the wind... what resulted was lots and lots of shards and pieces of ice that looked like a tornado had hit them... I've never seen ice behave in this way, and it went out about a hundred feet...

WOW! This looks like it could have been a part of Superman's "Fortress of Solitude." I love the formations of ice and the golden glow in them. Wonderful shot, and thanks for explaining what this was and how it happened.
