I find these birds so fun to watch, and a real challenge to catch with the lens. This was taken earlier in the year at a nature area.He/she was flying around probably catching insects, they had a nest close by.

This was my first time out with the Nikkor 80-400 Lens, and it's a handheld shot. I rarely use a tripod anymore because you never know what photo opt is going to appear, and they can get in the way. :)

Thank you for commenting.

They are busy birds Tigz. I like them but mosquitoes don't care for them. :)
Good action shot and well done handheld.

Whoah! Outstanding freeze on this one, Sandi, your shutter speed set so well you must have been waiting. I'm guessing there were plenty of photos on your card that didn't turn out well (mine, too :o). That's one of the things I really enjoy about today's digital photography... no longer held to 36 exposures you can't see until you pay cash to get them developed. Swallows are particularly difficult to capture because they're very fast and they flit all the time, their flight path quickly variated as much as it is straight. To catch one with this clarity, on your first try, and handheld, is amazing. For myself, I use a tripod about 75 percent of the time, a monopod about 5, and handheld about 20. I trust my equipment but perhaps not so much my own noggin. ;oP
