The Quincy Mine~ is an extensive set of copper mines located near Hancock, Mi. It was in operation from 1846-1945 and some activities into the 70's. It was known as "Old Reliable" the company paid adividend to investors every year from 1868-1920. It is now a part of the Natl. Historic Landmark District. Tours are given but we passed on that, since we would have had to wait, and had more ground to cover to get to Copper Harbor before the end of the day.

I appreciate all comments, thank you! :)

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Sandi, your photograph and narrative aroused my curiosity. For that reason I searched the internet for further information and found THIS. Thanks for this very interesting post, and for arousing my curiosity, 😁 !

When we traveled along the south shore of Superior, back in 2001, we collected a little sand from various beaches along the way. One was from the Whitefish Bay area, of white sand, in the far eastern end of the lake, and the other was just about here, near Hancock, where the lake sand was red. The color denotes ancient volcanic activity, which in turn, I believe, created the copper found in such abundance here.

There is something about abandoned mine sites that fascinates me. Al that effort now deserted.
