Steve and I are going to be in the Washington DC area in mid-July. I'm inspired by the UK group getting together and I'd like to see if someone lives near DC and would be willing to help organize a US get-together. Would there be any interest in something like that? We'll be there anyway from July 10-13 so if anyone might like to join us on the 14th for a couple of days I'd love to meet some fellow Caedesians! Hilda

Hilda I'd be very interested, but I checked the dates and saw the 14th is a monday. I'm in NYC, so I'd prefer to do something on a weekend which doesn't involve taking time off work. If others are in a similar boat… I'd be willing to help arrange a weekend pretty much anywhere in the northeast within a 4 to 5 hour radius of NYC.

I'm interested! I'm interested! I'm 25 mins SW of DC... I also second the thought about a weekend as I work M-F. I might be able to wrangle one day off...

I know the UK one is gonna be great!...We are all 'keyed' up and looking forward to meeting new Caedes members..both from home and abroad!...
If the US get-together gets off with a bang...I am only sorry, that I/We will not be able to make it!..far too many commitments this year!...
It would be my pleasure to meet up with you all....Just think of all those scotches you could buy me eh!...lol..
Hey Ron, I know 'someone' in NYC that can get you a steal-of-a-deal on a used auto to get you down here! He can be found on the corner of 5th and Vine... ;)

This looks great, I'm already going to England and because I'm 'just' a student, I can't afford a planeticket to the US now, maybe another time, then I would love to go to the US!

Count me in! DC is no problem for me and I'm not working that particular weekend. I had to bow out of the UK get together for family concerns, but by July things should be more normal.
Hmmm,
I'd love to come, though I already plan on going to the US (San Fransisco) in September,
Crossing the Atlantic twice a year is a little too much for me, I guess, 8~(,
how neat this idea is!!!!!! my son lives there so it's a possibility that i'd do it. sounds like fun! for those of you who haven't visited the area, it is truly FANTASTIC!
I would love to but there's no way I can go anywhere in the summer. I've always wanted to go to DC, particularly in the spring when all the cherry trees are blooming. Oh well.

If we can get this off the ground maybe it will become a regular thing and people in different parts of the country can pull things together for other get-togethers!

Always remember - Follow the Yellow Brick Road, it will lead you to the Emerald City and OZ A very nice place to be. Trust me on this one, I live there. The Lion **** MY CAEDES GALLERY****Another Site I'm AT - MY DA HOME PAGE
I'm just wondering what’s going to be taken place down in DC once everyone gets there. I only live up just outside Boston so the trip won‘t kill me. I can see there’s an age difference between well me and most of the people who have shown interest in going, and I know these get-togethers are more for the people who have contributed for awhile. So I guess the easiest question to ask is; Is this going to be a quiet reserved party or is there going to be a keg? I know there are a few people here who party hard.
Well I guess that counts me out. I'm 54, don't drink, haven't been contributing for a long while like some here. I probably have socks in my drawer that are 21 years old. LOL And there's nothing wrong with Partying, it's just that I've done my share and then some, don't care for it any more.

I don't know about how palatable DC is in mid-July or any other time. Parking is a problem. Motels/hotels are expensive. It could be very hot. And, it's not the safest city. Better choices to me would be MA in the fall; the beautiful mountains of New York and then there is the Smokey Mountains; Ocean City, Maryland; Acadia National Park in Maine; and many others. But, DC...in July?.............(faint)
Pat. I bet LA is hot in July. You'd be coming north so it might be somewhat cooler in DC. Like all larger cities, DC has its good parts and it's not so good neighborhoods, but it is also laid out quite neatly by numbered streets and not so bad to get around in. As for hotel accommodations, I recall getting a really excellent deal on a room in Alexandria, VA at the Hilton for about $59 a night by going through Hotwire.com. There is also Priceline.com. DC also has a subway. It has two major airports as well as another large airport in Baltimore about 40 miles away. Of course, MA would be perfect for me, in fact, you could all come to my house. Hey, did I say that?
Points well taken, but I'm a landscape gal. City buildings and historical things don't trip my trigger. And, like the those from the US going over to the UK, I will have already shot my financial wad for this year. We will see. If enough folks that I know real well decide to go to DC I might see what I can do. Thks Cindy.
Pat
I will say to those that need to fly to stay away from logan airport in Ma. Manchester airport is much easier to travel to/from. Ma would be a good choice in the fall. With Vermont and New Hampshire close by I think it would provide much more areas to go to as a group that wouldn't require spending allot.
I'm hoping we can get this one off the ground in time to make some plans for reasonable hotels and fun excursions. We don't have to stay in the heart of the city. Looks like Cindy has some excellent suggestions! If we get this one going then I hope others can plan yearly get-togethers in different parts of the country at different times. Wouldn't that be fun?

Ok, here's my 2 cents: HIlda was thinking since DC is one of the most photographed cities in the world (yess it's not landscape photography...) it would be nice to throw "out there" the idea of a US get-together. Yep it might be 88 degrees and humid but I've been standing in front of the Vietnam Memorial in mid-July and it's been 75 degrees and no humidity. Summer weather is a crap shoot here (I would think in most places of the world it is) especially when shooting outdoors.... We could end up completely rained out and sitting in a 'pub' somewhere. =) Just getting together is worth a trip if it's feasible for ya'll... If it works GREAT, if it doesn't - it doesn't! JMHO....
It isn't so much of location ...insomuch as it is the time of year...Midsummer usually is peak family-oriented vacation times, and unless everyone is deeply entrenched in art ...an artisan-inspired convention/get together just isn't exactly going to be on the "manditory list" for most...I'm game, if I can get the time...but for others, the topic of modern surrealism will be far outweighed by Mickey Mouse...

The time and place is not a problem but I would prefer a fall get together over a Summer trip unless you're talking a beach location somewhere. Anywhere and anytime you pick will be an inconvenience for someone. Pick a time and place and if we can make it we will and if not then maybe we'll just have to meet online for a virtual visit.

We've chosen DC for July 18-20 weekend. So far a handful of us can make it - I hope more will join us! I've researched the new butterfly exhibit at the Smithsonian and I've heard they have a beautiful botanical garden!

Well, I might give it a go if I have any money left after my UK trip. But then again, $4.00 a gallon for gas? That "Atlantic Broomstick" is looking gooooooooooood.

I doubt that I can make the DC trip but I have been there and there are alot of free or low cost things to take in. If you arrange it soon enough you might be able to get a tour of the capital building or the white house. Also the row of museums are free, just need to show your bags for security reasons. There is wonderful way to get around to see the sights there. I cannont remember the name of it but you can catch a tour ride that picks up and drops off at different points of interest. You can get off at whatever place you want to see and just catch the next ride which I think they run like every half hour or something like that. It's a great way to get around and I did this by myself as my friend was in a seminar and I had no problem at all. I found DC to be a very interesting city and recommend it for everyone. sandi

It seems to have gotten quiet on this thread. I do hope members will take Hilda up on this one. There is so much to see in D.C you don't have to be into politics to enjoy the city either. I really think you will be suprised at low cost / no cost things to do. I have a suggestion that might work better for you.
Maybe a get together next spring. That is a long way off but the cherry blossoms would be in bloom. I had the pleasure of being there at this time of the year and it's so lovely.
Plus it would not be so hot! Would be more pleasant for everyone. Good luck Hilda and hope this helps some. ♫ :)sandi ♪
I think it's great to get some encouragement on this! Thanks, Sandi! I'm going to be there in July and I know a few will join me - hopefully more as the time draws nearer!

Some of us have made our plans for the weekend of July 13-14 in DC. We'll be staying at the Radisson near Reagan which has easy access to the metro. If we can get a group e-mail list going it would be nice to start making a list of places people would like to go to take photographs. I've heard the monuments are very nice at night, that there's a beautiful botanical garden and the Smithsonian has a new butterfly exhibit to mention a few. My e-mail is: wheedance@mchsi.com if you'd like to contact me and get on the group e-mail.

"If we're going to do this on a weekend I think we'd be looking at the weekend of July 18-20." "We've chosen DC for July 18-20 weekend".~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm confused, Hilda. I scheduled everything for our trip to DC for the weekend of July 18-20, but now you have changed it to July 13-14th. Can that be? That would be a Sunday and Monday.

Wishing everyone a great time. I just wish I could be there also ... would love to meet everyone going. I was out East a month ago & I'm currently planning an autumn trip.
Can't wait to hear about the get-together & see some pics.
Have fun you guys...doesn't sound like alot are going but looking forward to some pics...no doubt there will be more of these get-togethers in future for those who can't make it this time.
We're baaaaaack! There weren't many of us, but we had a whoppingly wonderful time together despite the high heat and humidity of DC in July. There were Hilda (Wheedance) and Steve, PJ (Phasmid) and Pat, Jen (jeenie11) and her son, Chris, me, Roy and our son, Aaron. Mary (M0rnstar) joined us for brunch on our last day there too. We think it is great that Caedes was the catalyst that inspired this get together. Having a love for photography led to our getting to meet some really fine people we might otherwise never have known. We all had a lot in common and enjoyed each other's company for that short time.
We had a sort of whirlwind itinerary and got to see a lot. There was the Native American Museum, the Botanical Garden and evenings on the Mall to photograph the monuments by night, Mount Vernon, the National Cathedral and Bishop's Garden and dinner at the Vietnamese restaurant. Brunch on Sunday gave us a few hours to catch up on what we'd seen, share a few more happy moments and have a last meal together. It was hard to say goodbye, but we hope that one day soon we will get to do this again and some others will come along for the comraderie and great fun. Cynlee ;)

We came, we saw, we conquered! Or melted, but either way I was proud of our group for braving those wilting temps so we could meet face to face and enjoy taking some photos together. We had such a wonderful time it was actually possible to forget the heat and get caught up in the moment for awhile anyway. What fun to get together with other Caedesians! Our shared love of photography brought us together and it was like meeting old friends. I hope the tradition will carry on! Hilda
