Holiday Pictures - hmmm - can see that just opening the floodgates of posting family outing snaps followed by the inevitable outrage when they get rejected :-/
depends how you define the contest - holiday locations (doesn't really make any sense as one mans holiday is another mans home) or holidays as in the American definition of it - Christmas, fall etc (which we've already done)
Oh Dear, Phil and Verena, think of it this way, there might be a great flood of dross, if your cynicism proves correct, but even if there is, the topic is SO mundane it will take great imagination or a really cracking fine landscape to win the contest, so it still qualifies as a challenge in my book. I would, however, want this topic to be listed as "done" if it gets up this time so we don't find ourselves enslaved to happy snappers constantly voting for this topic or one's akin to it month after month so they can put their holiday snaps in a comp! Ha!
Mikel.
Look on the bright side Phil: if everyone else posts snapshots, it'll give my non-snapshot image a better chance of winning :-P
With regard to Chris's question, the term "holiday" is used differently here in the US. What you call "holiday" we call "vacation". I'm guessing whoever listed this was using the American definition, considering the time of year.
Mikel - its not cynical if its true. my point being that the subject is so vague its almost pointless - you may as well just say photography. without any clear definition it makes entering and worse still judging a real chore.
As one other member noted on a recent poll - you may as well just have a subject such as 'the simplest, easiest, and least challenging thing possible'
Backyard Scenery
Pet on a Pillow
Happenings about town or village or whatever
Oh how cute this child is
I Saw it and Snapped it, processed the hell out of it, HDR'd it, and Framed it. Voila...Desktop!
....
And last, but not least...
Please, even if you don't visit my gallery, check out my "Faves".I've left them intact since day "1", and would like it if every image there got the attention they deserved.
I thought this space was for thoughtful comments and suggestions not snide and sarcastic references to what other members might post - it must be wonderful to be so superior to everyone else.
Looks like I won't be entering this contest as I don't decorate for the Holidays & if I capture anything it's most likely something I'd share elsewhere with family members only. I will enjoy seeing what contestants do come up with.
Some food for thought ... if not now, but for future contests.
1. Looking Through ... where the main subject is seen through a portal or opening such as a doorway or arch ... anything similar to that.
2. The Meaning Of Life ... open to lots of interpretation.
3. Passage In Time ... Hmmmmmm, what could that be?
4. Name That Tune ... where the name of a song or a line in a song best describes an image.
Oh yeah, I've gots lots more topics, but will only list one from the above mentioned at this time. I'm only allowed one topic suggestion ... just found that out the simple way.
I do like 'Lightning In A Bottle' as it gets me thinking outside the box.
No claims to superiority being made here. Rather, a sense of distaste for what appears to be a lack on the part of some to truly try harder, push further, and dig deeper. Some submissions for the last few contests are comparable to wearing jeans and a wrinkled, albeit freshly laundered, shirt to a job interview. Where's the suit? The tie? The freshly shined shoes?

that clearly isnt the point he was making. the whole point of a contest by its very definition is to be challenge to do better rather than keeping in manufactured comfort zones.
that and the fact that a significant amount of people also use the contests as a tool to circumvent the code of conduct whether it be uploading snapshots or even images they have stolen from other members here for instance - indicating a total lack of any thought or creativity. hence the frustration at the increasingly mundane subject matters been chosen.
Whoever suggested the holiday option still hasn't chosen to expand on or define what they mean exactly so (as seems inevitable) if it is chosen then it will be just a mish mash of incoherent images.
My point, sir Phil is that some/many/most folk might not think hard about this topic but that does not mean it cannot be a challenge if a particular photographer WANTS to be challenged. The openness of which you lament is also a provocation to imagination - it allows for someone, say, to produce a holiday shot of motion, if motion was what they wanted to shoot, if the shot is powerfully both holiday thematic rather than generic thematic AND a great motion shot, it could win. I suspect in terms of voting, particular from the mods, if two equally skilled shots are in the balance, the one that clearly is holiday themed wins out. Of course, I love lemon juice, your groove might be somewhat different.
Peace,
Mikel.
Holiday topic? I agree with Robs two comments. Something NEW that has not been done, with some work involved, creativity, chalange, a goal, push the envelope. My nickels worth
It sounds like all you Caedes "old timers" have had your fill of holiday images. Okay. That's understandable. But how about the members who have never entered a holiday photo? The ones who have become members for the first time (or again) this past year. Aren't they allowed to become disenchanted by their own experience? And what exactly is wrong with Christmas? I would assume many of the members celebrate it so it must mean something to them. And as for family images, yeah, a shot of uncle Bob, asleep in the recliner, wearing a santa hat someone snuck on him as a joke is tacky with a capital TACKY. But there are loads of great images of ordinary celebrations of the season that are currently on Caedes, like one I saw yesterday. "Christmas in Cracow" by kanapon, is a real beauty, or a line of kids caroling. Lighten up. It's Christmas.
