Victor Hugo wrote elegies about Etretat(France-the Normandy coast)as early as 1835:"It is the grandest architecture there is.."...He was speaking,of course,of the chalk cliffs that plunge into the English Channel...In the early 19th century Etretat was already earning it's reputation as a charming Norman seaside resort that was attracting renowned artists in droves..Over time Monet,Corot,Courbet and later,Matisse spent considerable time painting the majestic cliffs..You can see here the beach and the Amont Cliff..At the top is a charming little church in front of which you have a breathtaking view of the cliffs opposite you..
