The Foxglove derives its common name from the shape of the flowers resembling the finger of a glove. It was originally Folksglove - the glove of the 'good folk' or fairies, whose favourite haunts were supposed to be in the deep hollows and woody dells, where the Foxglove delights to grow. Folksglove is one of its oldest names, and is mentioned in a list of plants in the time of Edward III. There is a northern legend that bad fairies gave these blossoms to the fox that he might put them on his toes to soften his tread when he prowled among the roosts. Poinsonous, and the original source of digitalis, which it is said was taken by Vincent Van Gogh for epilepsy, and that the visions it caused may have influenced his art. It goes by many names, including Dead Mens Thimbles. The latin Digitalis derives from Digitabulum, which means 'thimble'. A most interesting plant -read about it HERE. .Panasonic DMC-FZ7.. Thank you for taking a look.Any comments are most welcome and always appreciated.

Like most poisonous flowers they are so beautiful and you have done a great job of presenting them. Foxes with purple flowers on their feet - LOL - Female foxes with purple artificial toenails! Cardiac patients with purple finger gloves!. Thanks for sharing, Lyn.

I love this image and the purple speckles. I appreciate the detail you have given on the image as most do not tell us much about what we are seeing. It is interesting and informative. You have framed it well.

Ah, yes the foxglove. Takes me back to many wonderful hours spent in the forest. You've done a wonderful job capturing the color and finer details. As always your framing and presentation are spot on. Also, I appreciated the breadth of the narrative.

PERFECT in all aspects untill the very small detail, not to mention the effort you made for your excellent review. Some details= Digitalis is no longer used for epilepsy (long time ago), still used in cardiology in restricted indications under strict medical supervision. Although toxic only at high doses, it has been replaced by more effective and safer drugs.

I spent a considerable amount of time reading the link you provided also, and when I came to the digi translation, I couldn't help but think of our own thimblecamman...I think it fits him rather nicely and gives him that certain foofiness that he so mightily needs !! Beautiful job, Eve. I certainly have enjoyed all aspects of this upload. You do put so much of yourself into your uploads, and it's appreciated loads :)

You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being. - Hermes

Great shot, Eve. These have naturalized in our area and reseed prolifically almost to the point of being weeds. I'm sure ThimbleCamMan has seen lots of them along the roadsides in Washington.
