That's cheating! Shooting from inside of a cool house. Great idea. Thanks for the inspiration.

Just wanted to show all my bird fans how I get my shots. Notice the camera lens sticking out of the window on the left, and the hummingbird feeder on the deck and the bird feeder on the right side, the birds land on the log or the branches before they go to the feeder to get there seeds. That's when I zoom in and get them posed on the branch so it looks like a natural setting. I hope this helps some of you to get better bird photos. I use a Canon 40D and Canon 70mm-200mm f/4 "L" series lens.

What's the grill for, ducks? Just kidding. Looks a little redneckish but we are from the Show Me State. Great idea and better post.

Well, on your advice a while ago, I tried something like this too, except that my windows open from side to side..I thought also that you shot from your basement window. Well, I'll try the pillow trick. I guess that's where I failed..nice sunset, btw !

EDIT: I take it you don't have squirrels or bears!!

How nice of you to share this with us Gregg! It's a great idea and you've definitely got it 'down' to a science. It's great you don't have bears or squirrels or in my case CATS! (Mine, of course. drat it.) Got cats before I realized how much I LOVE the birds... Thanks for this great tutorial on how to 'shoot' birds.. :0) ~Mary~

What a great and ingenious setup Gregg, all you see is the finished product which is what counts and is fantastic. Even fractals take a little wizardry to bring the finished image to the viewer.....but my studio is in my computer. LOL

Letting us in on Your trade secrets Gregg
Congratulations on managing to pull them in so close to Your house !!
I'd always imagined You were shooting them further away using a x2 converter with perhaps a 300mm zoom lense.

thanks for giving us some very useful tips Gregg - now all I need is a deck and some interesting birds - mostly just pigeons and starlings and magpies here! I do have a feeder in my garden though, so maybe I should put some food on it and move it closer to my window! nice glimpse into your life and the sunset is an added bonus in your photo. :)

250mm lens? Is that right? I haven't seen this photo before, and it gives me some ideas. Unfortunately the sun is on the wrong side of my house. We have a big tree-covered side yard that's infested with birds (and cats), but it's on the north side of the house, and being in the northern hemisphere the sun is of course on the south side. The other side of the house has ugly neighbors. Maybe I could fix that ...
