Margerie Glacier - Glacier Bay - Alaska, USA. From the bin of our trip to Alaska in July 2011. A low cloud ceiling covered Glacier Bay on the day we visited. One smaller cloud hovered over the face of Margerie Glacier. To give you a sense of scale, the face of this glacier, above the waterline, is 250 feet (76 m), and over a mile (1.6 km) wide; visible here is about 1/3 of the glacier's width. The crevices are about 100 feet (30.5 m) deep. (An advantage of a cloudy day in viewing a glacier is that the blue hue of the compressed dense ice is better seen.) Enjoy!

Thad, to me this is a very nice continuation of your Alaska-series, taken on your cruise in 2011. Both image and narrative are impressive again. One must have seen it with own eyes to get a proper idea about the huge dimensions. Thanks for this fine and interesting posting, my friend!

Regards, Cornelius.

A fine photo Thad. The intense blue of glacial ice always amazes (and delights) me.
You have a great example here. The hovering clouds are an extra bonus in this majestic scene.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

That's a lot of Scotch on the rocks if one so desires, Thad.
I love the shots from you trip to Alaska. This one is no exception.

The scope of that glacier is amazing and the color seems unreal but I know it's truly blue like that. Great scene Thad.

Oops. Looks like I just repeated your blue ice information in my comment on your other glacier photo. This one's a beauty, too, and that hovering cloud really adds to the dimension. You're absolutely right about overcast skies making for better photos. Bright sun can deepen shadows and wash out highlights while clouds in the sky can add so much to the character of a landscape or, as in this case, simply help us see it better. Nice work. I'm jealous. 8D -Nik
