Cromwell, Connecticut, USA. After six inches of rain fell yesterday, the chrysalis opened early this morning, with the Monarch hanging onto the shell to dry his wings. When the wings opened, the distinctive male black dots on the wings were visible. As the wings dried, the colors deepened. After several hours, he flew a few feet to a nearby plant, rested some more, opened and closed the wings a few more times, then flew off on his first voyage. Soon, he'll head south. 70-200mm, EXIF: 180 mm, f/6.7, 1/60 sec, ISO 500.

Thanks for the shot of the newly born monarch Thad. I, like Sandi, have seen more monarch than ever this year and am delighted to see that.

I'm amazed at how small the chrysalis is compared to what was in it. Males have dots on the wings... and females don't? That's why I think the posts we include are important (despite how some people refuse to write about their images); we get to learn as we enjoy the view. Very cool, Thad.
